The playboy genius who revolutionised popular song and arguably the greatest lyricist in the English language, Cole Porter, in a career that spanned more than three decades, wrote over a thousand songs, nearly all of them for Broadway shows or Hollywood movies.
While contemporary classical composers saw jazz as little more than a flavour, to Porter it was the rhythm and harmony of the moment. It no accident then that some of the greatest interpretations of Cole Porter’s songs were created by jazz, blues, swing and pop artists of the century; artists that responded to the subtleties of Porter’s songs and imbued them with depth and sensitivity.
