In view of Sir Simon Rattle’s arrival in 2017 as Music Director of the London Symphony Orchestra, this landmark album has attracted renewed attention. The earliest Rattle recording in the Warner Classics catalogue, it was made in July 1977, three months before the young conductor’s first concert appearance with the LSO. His thrilling collaboration with the orchestra and with Andrei Gavrilov, winner of the 1974 International Tchaikovsky Competition, went on to win a Gramophone Award.
