Crabtree, born in Burnley, England, long since settled in Montreal, Canada is a decade into his existence as Paper Beat Scissors. By the music industry’s contemporary metrics, that’s long enough to build, ride, crash and burn a number of fleeting personae. In contrast, the arc of Paper Beat Scissors has been a rewarding, holistic slow burn. Following a steady stream of accomplished releases (covered by BBC, Rolling Stone and Exclaim, among others) and live appearances (alongside Mark Kozelek, Tanya Tagaq, Dan Mangan and My Brightest Diamond, for instance), “Parallel Line” focuses the sound we’ve come to love along the way: strong-willed chamber folk in the name of visceral tenderness. The creative journey that fed Parallel Line was slow and circuitous.
Crabtree credits a myriad of learning opportunities as shaping the final work: late, hazy nights at The House Of Miracles with JJ Ipsen and Marshall Bureau in Cambridge, ON, forming the bedrock the album was built upon, chance bass clarinet jams with Jeremy Dutcher, deep delves into the classical world collaborating and experimenting with Richard Reed Parry (Deutsche Grammophon), sharing lodgings with Yuval Zorn (conductor of the Tel Aviv Opera) at the Banff Centre for the Arts and spending the last year arranging his music for orchestral instrumentation and performing with chamber ensembles from coast to coast across Canada. A through line is marked by the contributions from long-standing PBS collaborators Michael Feuerstack (lapsteel) and Pietro Amato (French horn) and the whole package is wrapped up by the careful hands of mix engineers Sandro Perri and Dean Nelson (Beck). The final output is a well-threaded journey set to spur and comfort the listener in turn.
