You could be forgiven for thinking that Lee „Scratch” Perry had multiplied after his death. No sooner had the news of his disappearance faded away than they appeared: the supposedly last, final, really very last recordings. However, the actual finale does not take us to mythical retreats, but to Berlin, to Mouse on Mars, to a studio that is more of a laboratory than a rehearsal room.
There, something begins that seems less like an album than an event. „Spatial, No Problem.” and even the title contains Perry’s laconic cosmology. The opener „Rockcurry” sounds as if someone had fed dub into a machine and let it dream. Motorik meets noise, Dadaist speech splinters meet the voodoo that Perry always suspected was in the machines. Reggae is no longer a genre here, but an echo that cannot be shaken off.
The single itself is accompanied by a video that continues this aesthetic. Collages of studio photographs, drawings and found objects combine to form a shimmering stream of images that is less illustrative than reminiscent. It is not a classic music video, but rather a visual echo of the recording process, a kind of moving archive in which presence and fragment overlap.
The encounter itself remains enigmatic. Perry appears late, unpredictable, with suitcases full of talismans and slogans. He inscribes walls, mumbles, coughs, sings and transforms the room into an acoustic ritual. The Germans follow, record, laugh, make soup. They hardly speak, they do.
The Barbican Centre is now showing that this was more than just a studio moment. As part of Project A Black Planet, the work can be experienced as a walk-in sound installation, a space in which Perry’s legacy is not preserved, but continues to liquefy.
Perhaps that is the real point of this last album, that it is not one. It is a transition. A promise that space is actually not a problem.
