Recorded 1953, before recording this CD, Erich Kleiber conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the by then traditional Beethoven cycle in 1950. He was especially applauded for the „Fifth and Sixth Symphonies” which, together with the Ninth Symphony, are traditionally the highlights of Beethoven’s symphonies. In the Fifth Symphony through a rigorous thematic treatment, especially in the first movement, and in the Sixth Symphony through its use of extremely descriptive program music.
