Black Metal, DSBM, Romantic Black Metal, CD kiadvány, 2026-os album.
All music was composed, recorded and mixed by Kyrylo Kyrylenko and Yevhen Konovalov. Ukrainian-born, Czechia-based Draugveil took the internet by storm last year with the release of his first album, Cruel World of Dreams and Fears. The obviously Kekht Arakh-inspired take on depressive suicidal black metal mixed with subtle inspirations from emo rap was something that appealed to hipsters, music heads, and black metallers alike, while also having the habit of pissing off the trve kvlt types who look at anything that isn’t true to style of 90’s Norwegian black metal as being fake and impure. I couldn’t give less of a fuck what any of those camps think. I go into each album I review with an open mind, and as such I found myself enjoying Draugveil’s debut quite a bit. Despite being unfamiliar with Selvnatt I went into this new collaborative effort between the two musicians expecting something similar to Cruel World of Dreams and Fears, and that’s basically what I got.
Blades & Roses ups the cheesy factor by going full bore into DSBM tropes, from layering clean, melodic guitars over the distorted guitars, including lots of piano and keys, and clean vocals being surprisingly prominent. The whole thing feels very tongue in cheek and yet sincere at the same time. One gets the sense that these guys grew up listening to Norwegian black metal a la Burzum and Mayhem before moving on to indie rock and bedroom pop like Fog Lake, and then into cloud rap like Lil Peep. The stylistic elements are there, even if those latter elements are subtle.
This is a pretty solid collaborative effort between Draugveil and Selvnatt that features tons of catchy riffing and vocal hooks. The record never really breaks out of its dreary, romantic atmosphere, but that’s okay. These guys aren’t out to be the most extreme voices in black metal. All they want to do is write sad songs with post-punk drum beats that you can groove to, and at that they do a pretty damned good job. I went into this with an open mind and found myself liking it a fair bit.
