Do you see me?” So begins Free , the deeply personal seventh album from Bulgarian–Canadian jazz vocalist, poet, and songwriter Gergana Velinova (Gair-GAH-nah). Gergana believes a song’s real life begins when it quietly finds its way into the listener’s world and becomes part of their story. There is a moment on every track where the melody settles into your heart before your mind has caught up. Free is that kind of album. Musically, the album traverses a wide stylistic spectrum – contemporary jazz rooted in her Bulgarian heritage, jazz/pop, sensual Bossa novas, blues reflections, and lyrical ballads. Each line is shaped to be sung, remembered, and lived with.
