NYC-based jazz vocalist April Varner graduated in May of 2022 with her Master’s degree in Jazz Voice Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. At the age of 26, April has already performed and studied with a multitude of legendary artists and jazz luminaries. She was recently awarded the 2023 Winner of the International Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition. Comes in gatefold card case.
When April Varner was five years old, she sang a song that she had memorized from repeated viewings of „The Little Mermaid”. While her performance was not perfect—Varner readily admits that she missed some of the words—her grandmother was so impressed that she gave April her first piano lessons. A few years later, April’s mother convinced the University of Toledo’s music faculty to allow her now 8-year-old daughter to study classical voice. April seemed destined for a career on the opera stage, but when she was a freshman at Indiana University, she was faced with a choice between the required opera chorus or the elective show choir. She decided to stick with The Singing Hoosiers and she switched her major to jazz voice the following year. It took a while for April to appreciate jazz, but once she did, she learned quickly through outstanding teachers including Sachal Vasandani, Tierney Sutton—and later, at the Manhattan School of Music — Theo Bleckmann. In 2023, she won the International Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition, an experience which deepened her love for the First Lady of Song.
