Hailing from the vibrant roots rock scene of Nashville, Tennessee, Tristen has established herself as a prolific and versatile musician over the past two decades. Her talent for composing captivating melodies and astute lyrics has earned her high-profile collaborations. She co-wrote „Love is an Art”, Vanessa Carlton’s latest album, and toured with Jenny Lewis as part of her band Voyager.
Her folky 2011 debut album Charlatans at the Garden Gate earned her praise as „Nashville’s best-kept secret” (The Boston Globe), while 2013’s CAVES, co-produced by Stephen Hague, reinvented her as a hypnotic „synth-pop siren” (SPIN). Sneaker Waves was released in 2017 and marked her transition to fully producing her music and music videos in her home studio with longtime collaborator and husband Buddy Hughen. Rolling Stone described it as a „Nilsson-worthy power ballad”, while NPR’s Ann Powers called it „full of great melodies and catchy arrangements that tickle the ear and won’t get out of your head”.
2021 saw the release of ‘Aquatic Flowers’, after which Talkhouse proclaimed: „She’s one of those songwriters and performers that other musicians absolutely love, and for good reason. She’s a risk-taker in the studio, venturing into uncharted territory and almost always finding something that’s at least interesting and often incredible.” Her fifth studio album „Unpopular Music” will be released in October and features contributions from Pat Sansone of Wilco, Vanessa Carlton, Becca Mancari, Erin Rae and Natalie Prass. It also marks her return to the stage, continuing a career that has seen her perform with Robyn Hitchcock, Television, Ezra Furman and the Mountain Goats.
