Post-classical composer, sound artist and curator Matthew Patton is back with his second album as Those Who Walk Away.
„Afterlife Requiem” is an elegy for his friend and colleague Jóhann Jóhannsson. Drones, electro-acoustics and almost complete silence, extracted from unfinished recordings on Jóhannsson’s hard drives, form the basis for two string quintets – Ghost Orchestra (Reykjavík) and Possible Orchestra (Winnipeg) – which are processed and obliterated in a mournful, lengthy work.
Patton has also worked again with Andy Rudolph (Guy Maddin) and Paul Corley (Sigur Rós, Ben Frost) on the co-production and sound design to create a seething physicality that contrasts simmering depths with haunting movements of ghostly strings.
