Chip Taylor, született James Voight (Jon Voight színész testvére) már az 1960-as években elkezdte írni a slágereit. Sikeres producerként is dolgozott, többek között James Taylor és Neil Diamond lemezein.
Az 1970-es években 6 saját albumot adott ki, közöttük szerepelt a hatalmas kommerciális sikert hozó „Last Chance”.
Az 1980-as évek kicsit visszafogottabra sikeredett, de az 1990-es években ismét remek periódus következett. Bonnie Raitt „Luck of the Draw” albuma nagy durranás volt, de ebbe a körbe tartoznak a Midge Ure, Rosie Flores, Don Henry és Darden Smith… stb elöadókkal közösen készített munkák is.
Chip Taylor gyakorlatilag kvázi slágergyárként üzemelt, olyan dalokat írt, mint a: „Wild Thing” (The Troggs), Merilee Rush & Juice Newton (Angel in The Morning), „He Sits at Your Table” (Willie Nelson), „I Can’t Let Go”, „The Baby” (The Hollies), „Worry” (Johnny Tillotson), „Make Me Belong to You”(Barbara Lewis), „I Can Make It With You” (The Pozo Seco Singers, Jackie DeShannon), „Any Way That You Want Me” (The Troggs, Evie Sands, Juice Newton), „Step Out of Your Mind”, „Country Girl City Man” (Billy Vera & Judy Clay), „I’ll Hold Out My Hand”, „Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)” (Janis Joplin), „Julie” (Bobby Fuller Four), „Lonely Is As Lonely Does” (The Fleetwoods), „Sweet Dream Woman” (Waylon Jennings), „A Little Bit Later On Down the Line” (Bobby Bare) and „Son of a Rotten Gambler” (Emmylou Harris, the Hollies, Anne Murray) and „Poppa Come Quick” (Bonnie Raitt).
