Front to back, the abundant ideas and soundscapes turn „Desiderium” into a prism of sound. Every song is an amalgamation of what makes rock kinetic, bridging a gap between acts like Helmet, Karp, Handsome, and Quicksand with the sonic journeys of an Isis or Jesu. It’s this thirst for exploration that makes Somnuri who they are: they’re an ascendant band, not constrained by any label or descriptor.
SOMNURI does not cling to the surface. The band’s heavy metal trudges from genre to genre with the fervour and confidence of a band willing to cross the thresholds of all that is perceivable and possible. The band, consisting of lead guitarist and vocalist Justin Sherrell, drummer Phil SanGiancomo and bassist Mike G, has earned the attention of magazines like Revolver Magazine, BrooklynVegan, MetalSucks, MetalHammer and more, and their latest work is a true testament to the band’s insatiable work ethic, cementing them as one of heavy metal’s most exciting up-and-coming acts. Recorded at Gojira Silver Cord Studios, mixed by Justin Mantooth at Westend Studios and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege Mastering, „Desiderium” sees the band move seamlessly through a variety of tempos and sounds, forging new paths for some well-trodden ones.
Songs like „Paramnesia” come across like a sludgy wrecking ball, reminiscent of Eyehategod and Crowbar in their strongest moments. Instead of mosh parts, the band pulls back and lets Sherrell intersperse a few clean vocals before going full on again. Sherrell’s voice is insanely versatile and can deliver both soulful clean vocals and grim screams. He is the perfect contrast to the band’s instruments, weaving a tapestry between sludge, grunge, psych-rock and more.
