Nihilistic Easyrider is the brainchild of Narrow Head frontman Jacob Duarte – but make no mistake, he doesn’t go solo. „Deluxe Edition” is a mixtape of sorts, a collection of songs written at various points in Duarte’s career. These songs span a wide spectrum of stylistic references, from saccharine Y2K emo and young, dumb and pop-heavy punk punk to Soviet fuzz-driven alt and pure Evan Dando-core verse-chorus-verse-chorus-ready pop-rock. Brought to life by a cast of characters including Narrow Head drummer Carson Wilcox, producer (and former tourmate) Graham Hunt and features from Momma’s Allegra Weingarten and Ella Friedman, this debut album nonetheless offers masterfully polished and hook-laden interpretations of Duarte’s signature songwriting aesthetic.
These songs wade into the same mess of romantic failures and scorched brain synapses that longtime Narrow Head listeners have come to know and love, just from a different, new perspective. Duarte’s tales of loneliness, anticipation, and the tangled complexities of life in songs like „Getaway Plan” and „Well Kept Secret” are framed by a vibrant backing band of droning synthesizer sounds, barroom piano stabs, rattling acoustic guitars, and tribal-tat-coded record-scratch aesthetics that subtly echo both Incubus’ heaviest moments and Deftones’ softest.
With „Deluxe Edition”, Duarte provides us with diary-like vignettes of a life in constant motion, offering a more introspective insight into the mind of a songwriter whose life revolves around the stage but ultimately takes place elsewhere.
For Jacob, „the songs on Nihilistic Easyrider are closer to the music I always wanted to make when I was growing up,” he says, „a personal diary of growing up through music.”
