„Unfolding” is Jessica Moss’ most meditative and plaintive solo album and perhaps the first in the Montreal violinist and composer’s decades-long discography that can rightly be described as ambient. The former member of Silver Mt Zion and Black Ox Orkestar draws from post-classical, drone, minimalism, industrial/metal, power electronics, klezmer and other folk traditions. This is not abstract ambient music; multi-layered violin melodies, electro-acoustic arrangements, intermittent voices and percussion from Tony Buck, drummer of The Necks, produce deeply emotional, genre-bending compositions guided by a spirit of searching and incantation, unfolding in a prevailing atmosphere of evocation and mournful restraint.
