Memphis Minnie (1897-1973) was one of the most influential artists and colorful figures in blues for nearly three decades.
Along with Big Bill Broonzy and Tampa Red, she was one of the pioneers and giants of the Chicago blues scene.
With respect to her work as both a composer and performer, Minnie thrived in a genre dominated by men. „The Queen of Country Blues” did everything the boys could do, and she did it in a fancy gown with full hair and makeup. Minnie also helped form the roots of electric Chicago blues, as well as R&B and rock & roll.
She had it all: stellar guitar chops, a powerful voice, a huge repertoire including many original, signature songs
and a stage presence simultaneously glamorous, bawdy and tough. „She hung out at the bar with all the guys, like I’ve had to do over the years; she drank and chewed tobacco and spat,”
singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams stated in 2013. „But she was also very feminine. When you see pictures of her she’s wearing a really pretty.”
This essential edition contains 17 studio tracks, consisting of a discerning selection of Memphis Minnie’s prolific recording catalogue, including a variety of the sensational sides she made for different labels (such as Okeh, Columbia, Vocalion, Decca, Bluebird, J.O.B., and the Chess Records subsidiary Checker) between 1930 and 1953.
