On 12th August 1990 the band had released Metallica, commonly known amongst fans and critics as The Black Album. To capitalise on the success of the album, Metallica embarked on a mammoth series of live performances, staging over 350 gigs across three tours. Although, following the release Metallica. there were no further group albums for almost five years, the well-received documentary film, A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica, in 1992, and the live album, Live Shit: Binge & Purge, in 1993, kept fans somewhat fulfilled. Metallica performed at the Woodstock ’94 festival on Saturday 13th August, alongside Nine Inch Nails, Aerosmith and the Rollins Band, and showed no trace of tour fatigue as they produced a show generally considered to be one of their best ever. Broadcast live on local FM radio and containing cuts from their entire back catalogue, including ‘Master Of Puppets’, ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’, ‘One’ and ‘Enter Sandman’.
Doing exactly what it says on the tin, ‘Woodstock 1994’, is an earful of thrash metal titans Metallica, nearing the end of their extensive Black Album touring cycle which saw them shift from one of the biggest metal bands, to simply one of the world’s essential live acts. With a set heavy on material from the previously mentioned work, including timeless hits such as, ‘Enter Sandman’, and, ‘Nothing Else Matters’, there’s also a conscious effort to cover the groundwork of their preceding full-lengths with nods to, ‘…And Justice For All‘ on anti-war anthem (‘One’), the iconic ‘Master Of Puppets’ title-track, as well as the criminally overlooked, ‘Ride The Lightning’, deep cut, ‘Fade To Black’. A mere two years before the haircuts, leather jackets, Napster lawsuit and questionable, ‘Load/Reload’, albums; journey back to a time when it was still cool to like Metallica. It is again, but it took some grovelling.
