Chicago-based singer-songwriter Max Subar laid the groundwork for “Anything Could Be,” his debut album, in a house on the shore of a frozen lake in Wisconsin. Subar returned to the sonic and spiritual landscape he had created during that initial ten-day session, staying fully in the moment by working only when he could truly immerse himself in it.
Most of the additional sessions that add texture and color to the album were recorded in Subar’s home studio—the same house where Case Oats, the band led by Casey Gomez-Walker in which Subar plays guitar, recorded their 2025 debut, “Last Missouri Exit.” His brother, Sam Subar, played drums. Additional instrumentation comes from Case Oats bandmates Spencer Tweedy (drums on “I Never” and “Way Up”), Jason Ashworth (double bass) and Scott Daniel (violin), as well as frequent collaborators Chet Zenor (electric guitar), Kelly Hannemann (piano), and Sarah Weddle (vibraphone, organ, and electric piano). The resulting arrangements are expansive and illuminating, lending substance to the core elements of the live guitar and vocal recordings on “Anything Could Be” without sacrificing their spontaneity.
The result is a captivating, candid debut that grows on the listener and rewards time and attentive listening. Its 11 songs are imbued with what the poet Adrienne Rich called “a wild patience”—a radical stillness that is itself a journey toward awareness, peace, and self-perception. It makes no promises about what comes next. Yet it leaves listeners in breathless anticipation of what that might be.
