This album was the first to be created entirely within the band and clearly bears the signature of producer and drummer Karl Brausch. „We had a strong rehearsal room atmosphere during the recording sessions. The whole process, without any outside involvement, was a complete collaboration,” Mechenbier describes their time in Brausch’s studio, Unter Null. „This gave us the opportunity to work on the record without any time pressure, whenever we had the time and inclination. We only gave the songs to Robert Whiteley for mixing. He was also the first person outside the band to hear a single note of MEISENSTAAT’s finished songs,” adds Brausch.
This was the first time we heard a single note of MEISENSTAAT’s music. Abundant reverb envelops the choruses in particular, while some songs, with their delays and echoes, have a wave-like quality reminiscent of late-era The Cure („Alles ist einfach,” „Klimawandel”). Guitars are softly modulated until we mistake them for keyboards („Kann und will nicht mehr,” „Achterbahn”), and simultaneously, the drums in some songs display a captivating, almost uncharacteristic intensity („Klimawandel,” „Achterbahn”). Dominik Mercier propels the heavier tracks forward on bass („Meisenstaat,” „Schlucken oder spucken”), while elsewhere, with his characteristic nonchalance, he evokes UK shoegaze („Alles ist einfach”). Pop and fragility hover over MEISENSTAAT, coexisting alongside intensity and aggression. Perhaps one could say that, overall, Love A’s sound has taken a step from the 1980s into the 1990s.
