Almost 45 years after they came together in the San Francisco punk underground, the Toiling Midgets (with musicians from Negative Trend, The Sleepers and others) have now renamed themselves Lazy Giants. In many ways, the new album enriches a decades-old tradition. Gray crafts meaty but atmospheric riffs from art-punk, glam and heavy rock material. High up in the stratosphere, his colleague Paul Hood creates cosmic abstractions: whimpering, distorted leads and persistent contrails of feedback. Talented drummer (and noted solo artist) Daniel Benyamin, originally recommended by Strokes producer and Hood collaborator Gordon Raphael, adds just enough warmth and ambition to the ponderous beats and loose rhythms. Toiling Days Are Over is the band’s first album since the 90s in which vocals play a central role.
