Folk legend Michael Hurley passed away on April 1, 2025. His last studio album „Broken Homes and Gardens” had only been completed two weeks earlier and is now due to be released. Today we present the track „Fava”.
„Fava” is one of the new songs on the 11 track album, which – as usual with Hurley – also contains some new recordings of older/reworked songs such as „Indian Chiefs & Hula Girls” (first released on „Watertower”, 1987) and „The Abominable Snowman” (first released on „Parsnip Snips”, 1995).
Work on „Broken Homes and Gardens” began shortly after the release of „The Time of the Foxgloves” (2021), when Hurley wanted to record another album at The Rope Room Studio in Astoria, Oregon. He brought back the Foxgloves crew of Brian Bovenizer (engineer), Kati Claborn (vocals/engineer) and Luke Ydstie (bass/engineer). The trio worked with Hurley in several sessions over the next three years, with Hurley recording the basic structure of many tracks (guitar and vocals) at his home (Bellemeade Phonics) and then working the tracks out at The Rope Room. Other collaborators include Rachel Blumberg (drums), Kassi Valazza (vocals) and Lewi Longmire (guitar).
Michael Hurley released his first album on Folkways Music in 1964 and released dozens of recordings over the course of his unconventional and highly influential 50-year career.
After his death, musicians of all ages paid tribute to him, including Colin Meloy, Ben Gibbard and Chan Marshall. Big Thief wrote on their Instagram account: „It’s impossible to describe how much your music means to us … Thank you for leaving us all this music that enriches our lives and softens our hearts.”
