It feels inevitable that The Green Ray and Blue Matter would eventually join forces. Nick Saloman’s history with the band stretches back to Walthamstow, where he regularly sat in at The Plough Inn, later sharing stages through The Bevis Frond. Formed in the mid-1990s by Help Yourself’s Ken Whaley and Richard Treece, The Green Ray have released seven albums and a 12” while navigating significant line-up changes.
Following the passing of Whaley, Treece and bassist Jeff Gibbs, the group continues under guitarist Simon Whaley, keeping the East London freak flag flying. Orchard House captures them in strong form: confident songwriting, supple musicianship and a sound that nods to Mighty Baby and Help Yourself at their most exploratory, with touches of Quicksilver Messenger Service and Grateful Dead-inspired Americana. A natural partnership, finally realised.
