The Merriweather Post Pavilion was the ideal venue for the penultimate concerts of the tour. This gem of a venue was part of a facet of the Dead’s tour that outsiders overlooked but insiders appreciated: Both the Dead and the Deadheads knew that venues were not merely passive backdrops, but active participants in concert history, brought to life anew at every tour stop and every performance. No wonder fans celebrated the venues and viewed them as spaces with a personality all their own, playing a defining role in shaping the spectacle that was a show. By 1985, the Dead’s popularity had already pushed Merriweather’s 14,000-seat capacity to its limits; these would be the band’s final performances there.
Since the band’s first performance there in 1983, Merriweather had become a favorite venue for both the band and the Deadheads. Its acoustics and atmosphere reflected its original purpose—designed by the famous architect Frank Gehry as the summer home of the National Symphony Orchestra—although its reputation had been cemented by the rock concerts held there. For decades, fans had considered it one of the best open-air concert venues in the country. A performance there now made it a sort of outpost, just outside the capital or at its metaphorical gates.
