The “Rites” LP by Jan Garbarek is released on ECM and presents the album’s extensive material in Garbarek’s characteristic blend of saxophone lines, electronic textures, and world-music references. The program documents sessions from March 1998, recorded at Rainbow Studio in Oslo; the release includes both reworkings of older pieces and newly composed titles. Jan Garbarek himself plays soprano and tenor saxophone as well as sampler and percussion; he is joined by Rainer Brüninghaus (keyboards, piano), Eberhard Weber (bass), and Marilyn Mazur (percussion, drums), with additional contributions by Bugge Wesseltoft on synthesizer and accordion.
The selection of tracks ranges from reworkings such as “It’s OK to listen to the gray voice” and “So mild the wind, so meek the water” to dedications and compositions by others: Don Cherry’s “Malinye” is included, as is Jansug Kakhidze’s “The moon over Mtatsminda,” sung here by the composer together with the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra; the piece “We Are The Stars” sets the voices of the boys’ choir Sølvguttene in dialogue with Garbarek’s soprano saxophone. As an ECM release, “Rites” showcases Garbarek’s compositional and sonic ambitions, interweaving Nordic motifs with references to Indian and other musical traditions, and using the various ensemble lineups for finely detailed, often rhythmically nuanced arrangements.
