Courtney Marie Andrews has long been celebrated as an artist who challenges herself and finds new interactions between folk and Americana. A vivacious poet and accomplished painter, she brings a multidisciplinary diversity to her work that is expressed in her ninth studio album, Valentine.
The album was produced together with Jerry Bernhardt and recorded almost entirely on tape. It contains complete studio recordings that emphasize raw performance rather than perfection. It’s Andrews’ most sonically experimental album to date – she plays flute, high-pitched guitars, myriad synthesizers and draws heavily on her art outside of music for inspiration. Her voice is beautiful and acrobatic as ever, but on „Valentine” she finds a new depth, an assertiveness that adds a new dimension to her biggest anthems and her softest moments.
Written at a time of profound endings and new beginnings, „Valentine” is a vulnerable exploration of love and infatuation. While anticipating the impending loss of a loved one who would eventually recover, a new but uncertain romance began to develop. Instead of building it, the two emotional poles seemed to merge, sowing doubt, unease and even obsession. But through her own exploration of music and art, Andrews found a way to become stronger inside. „I didn’t want to lose myself in my pain, I wanted to embrace it, make it my own,” she says.
The songs that resulted are devotional in their lyrics but defiant in their energy; it’s the sound of a woman standing in her first wisdom. With Valentine, Andrews rejects the objectification of love, the love that is filled with gestures and objects rather than trust, chaos and growth. In doing so, she delivers her most beautiful and loving album yet.
