East meets West on the album by jazz veteran Charles Lloyd, set for release in 2026.
With “Sangam & Friends,” the legendary saxophonist and flutist pays tribute to his close friend and longtime musical collaborator Zakir Hussain. The album brings together previously unreleased recordings by the Sangam Trio—Charles Lloyd, Zakir Hussain, and Eric Harland—alongside a top-tier lineup of Indian musicians, documenting an extraordinary artistic encounter that takes on special significance today.
At the heart of the album are studio recordings made in Mumbai in 2009. The occasion was Hussain’s annual “Abbaji” concert in honor of his father, the tabla master Alla Rakha. After the concert, Lloyd, Hussain, and Harland, along with some of the most prominent figures in Indian classical music, went to Nirvana Studio to further explore the musical inspiration sparked by this encounter. Together with Carnatic singer Vijay Prakash, bansuri master Rakesh Chaurasia, sarangi player Sabir Khan, keyboardist Ranjit Barot, and sitar virtuoso Niladri Kumar, a fascinating dialogue emerged between jazz and the rich traditions of the Indian subcontinent.
Following Zakir Hussain’s death in December 2024, the recordings take on an additional emotional dimension: they preserve not only the moment of an extraordinary musical collaboration but also the legacy of a deep friendship that lives on in this music.
