After a fantastic 2013, this year only gets better for Helen Chambers. The Yorkshire-based singer/songwriter with the release of her debut album Penny Arcade on Specialist Subject Records.
The album has been a long time coming and follows the release of a split EP with Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Sam Russo and Jimmy Islip, also released by Specialist Subject, in 2011. Penny Arcade, once again, sees Chambers collaborating with Ragan as well as double bass player Joe Ginsberg (Chuck Ragan, Baywood), Dear Everyone band mates El Morgan and Kelly Kemp.
Morgan Brown (Down & Outs) and Paul Abbott (Good Grief) played guitar and piano, respectively, and produced the album over „a couple of long weekends” in Liverpool. The result captures Chambers’ take on traditional country, folk and Americana whilst maintaining a distinctly English sound.
Influenced by traditional folk artists like Woody Guthrie, The Watersons and Ewan MacColl, Helen’s music is passionate and engaging with a lot of heart. Her songs appeal, not only to country, folk and Americana fans, but to punk rock and indie audiences too.
Her dulcet tones are unlike anyone else’s out there and, as simple as they are, these songs and the stories within them will bring a smile to your face, a tear to your eye and conjure up memories of good times passed before making you want to throw it all away and live life on the road.
