After forming The Left Banke, Montage and Stories, the world became familiar with the brilliant songwriting of Michael Brown. After forming Left Banke, Brown met singer Scott Trusty through a mutual friend. They collaborated on a solo single by Trusty in 1970, shortly before Brown founded Stories. When he reunited with Trusty a few years later, Scott introduced Michael to a couple of musician friends from Kansas City who had just moved to New York – Jimmy McAllister and Gary Hodgden (who soon changed his name to Gary West) – and the new collective quickly began writing and recording songs in a loft. Under the name „Brown’s Band”, the demos soon found their way to Seymour Stein, and The Beckies (named after Hodgden’s wife) had a home.
Unfortunately, their debut sank without a trace due to a lack of live performances and promotion, but those who heard it loved the power pop and lush compositions of Brown and Hodgden. For connoisseurs, the album was something of a holy grail, and people scoured second-hand stores for a copy of The Beckies. Now, almost 40 years after its original release, the original album (and more!) returns on Good To Know: The Beckies Story. The original 11-track album appears on the first disc, while the second disc features 13 previously unreleased songs from the original demo sessions, showcasing the band’s dynamic in a way that their later album sometimes hinted at. Good To Know has been remastered by Grammy Award-winner Michael Graves: The Beckies Story also includes new liner notes by the album’s co-producer Daniel Coston, with interviews with the remaining band members telling the story of the Beckies and their journey after the Beckies. Good to know, indeed.
