Set Sail (Live Radio Broadcast – KZEW Radio, Dallas – January 11, 1976).
Released on Vinyl LP (180-gram) and CD. The „Set Sail” album by B.W. Stevenson is released on the Steadyboy label and positions itself in the indie rock/alternative sphere. Steadyboy is issuing „Set Sail” in classic LP and CD format, clearly placing the focus on the title as a full-length album. This edition documents B.W. Stevenson‘s material within an alternative indie aesthetic and relies on the cohesive album format. The physical LP and CD underscores the tangible presence of the release and expands Steadyboy’s catalog with a work by B.W. Stevenson. The title and artist name — „Set Sail” and B.W. Stevenson — form the key identifying features of this Steadyboy release.
B.W. Stevenson and band, who were poised to begin their promotional U.S. tour for their LP „We Be Sailin’” deliver a tight, soulful live performance. B.W. Stevenson, along with Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Steve Fromholz, Rusty Wier and others pioneered a genre of music called „Progressive Country” in Austin, TX in the 1970s. Although unique to its region, that music was loved all over the world. B.W. had already scored a Billboard Top Ten hit with his song „My Maria” a few years earlier when he and his band went to Los Angeles in late summer of 1975 to record the „We Be Sailin'” LP for Warner Brothers. Upon return to Texas, B.W. and his group, known as the 5 Minute Weirdo Band, returned to their busy schedule of concerts, festivals and club dates around the state. They even taped an episode of the new PBS music show „Austin City Limits” in its first season. After weeks of preparation leading up to their „We Be Sailin'” national promotional tour, B.W. and band went to Dallas to do a live radio show. B.W. was in great voice and his group was „tighter than a banjo head”.
„Set Sail!” is a recently unearthed live recording from the KZEW-FM radio show. It showcases B.W. Stevenson’s soulful vocals, beautifully crafted songs and some fiery licks from one of Austin’s finest bands. The package includes liner notes from Ray Wylie Hubbard. Crack open a cold one, kick back and enjoy!
