With „Chin Up Buttercup”, Katie Stelmanis aka Austra 2025 opens a new chapter in her glittering, dark pop odyssey.
The lead single „Siren Song” already suggests that Stelmanis has reinvented her ethereal electropop once again – somewhere between ABBA and Ray of Light, between the cosmic yearnings of the X-Files and the myths of Orpheus and the Sirens. A pop archaeology that seeks the divine in the club. „Siren Song”, co-written with Montréal producer Patrick Holland, hovers in a trance-like limbo: a plea for connection drowning in sparkling synths and melancholic clarity. Stelmanis’ voice, cool and sublime like a ray of light in the darkness, seems less human than mythical, a call from another realm, caught between beats and meaning.
On „Chin Up Buttercup”, Austra celebrates the paradox: heartbreak as a party, loneliness in glitter. „Sonically bright but also full of empty space”, wrote Stereogum. This is precisely Stelmanis’ art: pop that seeks redemption but is not afraid of tragedy. In spring 2026, Austra will be taking the album on tour across North America, Europe and the UK. It should be one of those nights when dance and transcendence mean the same thing.
