Alternative Rock, Power Pop, 2001-es album. CD újra kiadás, 2021.
The second album from Los Angeles-based band The Andersons comes jam-packed with enough catchy pop hooks and memorable lyrics to have you singing along with the brothers after one listening. The band deftly avoids the sophomore slump here; although the themes of love and loss may be overly familiar ones in power pop, The Andersons‘ songs go beyond the usual clichés, even managing to reference Tolstoy without sounding the least bit pretentious („Snub”), or turning what in lesser hands would have been a sappy sentiment into genuine emotion (the Robbie Rist/Jensen Bell-penned „Apology”).
Adding to the many joys the album has are the excellent vocals. It’s probably unfair enough to other pop acts that Derrick Anderson has such a smooth and at times, insinuating, vocal lilt, but his brothers, Bill and Bob, provide strong vocals as well. Luckily for them, Derrick is secure enough in his and their talent to let them take lead on a few songs. Wed the smart lyrics and exceptional vocals to solid musicianship (including brother Marcos‘ steady drumming) and you get an album more than worth your time and money. The band falters slightly on a couple of ballads, but the hidden bonus track, „A Million Dollars for Christmas,” ends everything on an upbeat, fun note. Highly recommended for power pop fans and others who value superior, quality music in these vapid, Britney-ized pop times.
