Among the founding fathers of Chicago’s tenor sax sound, Gene Ammons – a.k.a. „Jug” or „The Boss” – created a style that blended the expressiveness of Lester Young and Ben Webster with the chromaticism and rhythmic dexterity of Charlie Parker, adding tinges too of R&B and soul, all of which made his playing accessible to a wide audience.
With a career spanning four decades, Ammons produced an exceptional body of work throughout his lifetime. This was most apparent on the records he released on the legendary Prestige label during the early 1960s.
This collection brings together the entirety of Gene Ammon’s output released between 1960 and 1962, considered by most fans to be the man’s „Golden Era”, and during which time he was signed exclusively to Prestige. Collating eight original albeit fully remastered albums across four CDs and totaling almost five hours of music, this compilation serves as both a perfect starting point for those new to Gene Ammons’ music, and a welcome reminder of an enduring jazz influence for those already well-versed.
