Three Austrian émigrés, Peter Schidlof (viola), Norbert Brainin (violin) and Siegmund Nissel (violin) joined up with the British cellist Martin Lovett and formed the Amadeus Quartet in 1947. Their smooth, seamless style of playing attracted a large following. The String Quartet in D minor, „Der Tod und das Mädchen” (Death and the Maiden), is considered one of Schubert’s finest chamber works. The String Quartet in C minor („Quartettsatz”) is the first movement of a string quartet that Schubert never completed and regarded as one of the first products of Schubert’s mature phase of composition.
