The striking cover image – the abandoned swing illuminated against a twinkling starry sky – provides a captivating visual metaphor for the music on Close. „Music is a language of twilight,” confirms Steve Tibbetts. „The task is to translate shadows into sound.”
On his eleventh ECM album, the guitarist from Minnesota continues this quest, patiently developing his yearning improvised melodies over multi-layered loops and drones with dark percussion. Even though the timbres used – produced by the distorted electric guitar and a bright 12-string acoustic guitar, among others – make this music sound „Western”, its subtle, almost hypnotic unfolding hints at „Eastern” affinities. „I still strive for the moving sound of Sultan Khan,” says Tibbetts, referring to the late Indian sarangi master whose playing has long been one of his most important influences.
